The history of DFTD

Devil Facial Tumour Disease (DFTD) was first officially documented in 1996. Over the past two decades, this transmissible cancer has significantly impacted Tasmanian devil populations across the state.

Key Timeline

  • 1996: First reports of facial lesions observed in north-east Tasmania.
  • 2003: Research confirms the disease is a transmissible cancer.
  • 2008: The Tasmanian devil is listed as endangered by the IUCN.

The TWRC continues to work alongside wildlife health professionals and local researchers to monitor affected areas and support the rehabilitation and rescue of impacted individuals where possible.

Understanding the progression of DFTD is essential for both the public and our volunteers, as effective identification aids in the reporting process for state wildlife management.
